Standard 6: The teacher of music has skills in evaluating music and music performances.

The act of evaluation can often lead into assessment. This data collection allows the teacher to fully understand how the students are comprehending the lessons and if any material needs to be reviewed. Evaluating the music performance is a formative assessment of the capstone of the curriculum selected and how well it was matched to the ensemble of students. Evaluating music can determine if the curriculum selected for each ensemble is appropriate according to performance levels and will provide a challenge to the group.

For the first artifact of this standard, I have included a clip of the high school concert band as they are sight reading “United Nations March” by Carl King.

The second artifact is the beginning brass and percussion 5th grade class. The clip demonstrates our warm-up song and the opportunity for students to solo.
